In March of 2011 I graduated from The Ohio State University with a B.S. in Computer and Information Science. Before that I attended Bishop Watterson High School, and Our Lady of Peace.
In June of 2011, I began work at Tata Consultancy Services in Milford, OH, near Cincinnati. I enjoyed the work, but I missed Columbus quite a bit.

I’m married now! We had a wonderful ceremony and reception. My wife worked so hard on everything to make it absolutely amazing! I put in a lot of work as well of course, but she really owned the event. The planning and lead up activities pretty much consumed our entire existence this year. Now I’m trying to remember how to relax.
Miniatures With the wedding prep going on, I haven’t done much hobby stuff at all, but I did manage to play a couple of rounds of Space Station Zero.

I’ve been thinking a lot about life and what I want to do, but I haven’t really gotten anywhere. The whole world seems to be in flux anyway. So it’s a perfect time be confused along with everyone else. I’m finding that I need to strap down everything I can to stay sane. But even as I strap things down more things fly away.
I have 3 big tentpole creative projects that I hardly ever work on, but that take up a significant chunk of my mental energy.

The big news is that we’re engaged! I’ve been working toward this for a long time and I finally set things up so I could ask the way I wanted. And she said yes! It was a great day!
Friday was a not so great day, we got rear ended on the freeway. Luckily everyone is ok, but the back of our van is smashed in. So we’re car-less until the insurance companies sort stuff out.

I started a new project this weekend that is taking a lot of my attention. I don’t know how I feel about it yet.
We went to the Columbus Arts Festival today and it was great! We saw The Whiteouts, a local punk band I’m otherwise unfamiliar with, play a set under the railway bridge. Such a unique venue. I bought a print from Taylor C Adams. We weren’t able to stay too long, but we got to see almost everything and we got some excellent soft pretzels!

“Never trust anything that can think for itself, if you can’t tell where it keeps its brain.” - Arthur Weasley1
In the age of AI this quote pops into my head unbidden, but before it was so directly applicable, I started using a reworded version: Never trust anything if you can’t tell where it gets its funding.
This is a different way of thinking of the warning “you’re not the customer, you’re the product.

This week I returned to an essay I’ve been struggling to write for over a year. It feels like once a month or so I start over. Just refining and re-bullet-pointing the same ideas over and over again. All of the lists I have so far are pretty much the same. I think I need to find a solid 8 hours of contiguous free time to bang out a full draft.

Just got back from vacation and we found the coolest store! Retro Jake’s in Richmond, Indiana. They’ve got a sizable arcade and an excellent game selection from NES through the modern era. We spent a couple of hours there. I played a few games of DDR, a little Mortal Kombat 4, a bit of CarnEvil, and picked up a few games for my collection.
I got Streets of Rage 2 and Menacer for Sega Genesis and Star Wars Racer Revenge for PS2.

Happy Easter! This was a packed week! No special topic this time, but still lots to talk about!
Games This was a game heavy week! I played the demos for Urbano, Haste, Rollin Rascal, and So to Speak.
In particular I highly recommend Haste for its gameplay. I’m a little disappointed to find that it’s a rogue-like though. I would have much preferred something that respects my time more. The game-feel is absolutely stellar though.

I don’t think I will have anything else to share in that space anytime soon, if ever, but I would love to prove myself wrong.
Writing that post was part of a new plan I have to hopefully create smaller side quest releases as I work.

SGDK is an amazing framework for building Sega Genesis games. Among its features is the tool rescomp, which compiles resources like images and audio for use inside your game. The rescomp tool offers a path for extension. I’m currently using a rescomp extension to import my collision map from a csv file in ldtk’s super simple export. This guide should allow you to more easily write extensions for your specialized resources as well.

The world is impressively messy right now. I must admit that I’ve mostly turned inward. My focus over the last few months has been on a project that I don’t really want to talk about until I have something to show. Hopefully the first small piece will be ready to present soon.
I’ve enjoyed over a year of taking the bus to work now. The difference between busing and driving is incredible.

I’ve been trying to collect my thoughts on generative AI for months. I can’t seem to write something that I’m completely happy with. So I’m going to post this as-is. All opinions are a work in progress. For the rest of this article assume AI means generative AI.

At the start of this year, I decided to take up the “No Buy Year Challenge” that got popular on YouTube around New Years. More specifically I went for the “Low Buy” variant.
If you’re not familiar, the challenge is to go a whole year without buying anything, outside of a few predetermined exceptions like food and toiletries. I found out about the idea from this video by Grace Nevitt, but there are a ton of other videos out there.

I just closed all 228 of my open mobile tabs. I went through each and every one first, putting the ones worth saving in appropriate places in my notes, TODO lists, to read lists, and wish lists.
My open tabs had become a sort of an awkward unstructured TODO list of their own. I had tabs open for things I wanted to buy, articles I wanted to read, websites people had shown me on Discord, articles that bloggers had referenced.

In this case the main message - “nothing changes if nothing changes” - a call to actively engage in your own life - is something I needed to hear. It is an excellent shorthand phrase for a theme I’ve seen before but often forget.
“People have to save themselves. One person saving another is impossible.”
-Meme Oshino, Bakemonogatari
While the “nothing changes” version of the message is excellent branding and shorthand for the concept, It undersells the problem.

Spoilers probably. You have been warned.
I originally wrote the following at the beginning of October 2023. It is now the end of November. I’ve been hesitant to post it because, pretty much immediately after writing it, I finally spent some time in the underground after spending 20+ hours solely on the surface. If you’ve played the game, you’ll know that means I unlocked an ability that I probably should have unlocked much earlier, which means some of my observations are a little… off.

I took a break from blogging this summer. It was somewhat intentional as I had nothing to write. The format I had here was boring me and I couldn’t figure out what else to write. Still, I feel better when I’m writing. So not writing at all has probably done more harm than good.
My departure from the blog started out as an experiment with morning pages - a meditative practice where you write from stream of consciousness for 3 pages each morning.

I’ve been struggling a lot with my identity lately. The eternity of 2020 has done a lot to push mortality into the minds of everyone. But I also feel that I’ve been experiencing a heightened push in that regard from other angles as well. We watched Breaking the Rules, which was really not very good, but did make me think. Then I got the kidney stone over the holidays, which, while not life threatening, kind of put my life on pause for a month.

Web UI libraries should do everything in their power to render something relevant given absolutely any input. This, even if the consumer fails to include the necessary input for the component in question to function correctly.
When graceful degradation is discussed in programming it is generally in regard to what a web app should do when various web features are not supported: if JS is disabled, do X. If the api fails, do Y.

I’ve been leaving a note at the end of a lot of my writing to “do the thing I want to do, not the thing that is easy.” I think I’ve actually been managing to do that a little. I may not be able to keep it up all the time (or at all!) but it really does feel good when I can do it.
Above anything else, Obsidian has helped me to succeed in this area.

My girlfriend and I went to Ohayocon this weekend. It was great! Really good to be back at a con after so much time. This was our first con since the lockdown. We decided to ease our way in and did Saturday only.
We attended panels on zine making, slice of life anime, and traveling to Japan. The slice of life anime panel gave me a kick in the pants to start watching Super Cub and reconsider Kaguya-sama (although calling this slice of life is a stretch).

Content Quality Relevance Discoverability For documentation to be good it must meet all three criteria. Failure of any of the three indicates that the documentation is fundamentally flawed. It may be costing you or your organization much more than the time and energy spent producing it.
Content Quality First the document must accurately communicate information. It should be up to date when written and updated regularly when the underlying information changes.

I got sick on December 19th and didn’t stop. I’m now on my final dose of some antibiotic I’ve never heard of following shock wave lithotripsy. I’m incredibly lucky it was just a kidney stone (and food poisoning before that). But it did pretty much destroy any plans I had for the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023.
During my sick time I did a lot of vegging. I had filed vacation for the final two weeks of the year anyway.

So I got another phone.
Because of this I’ve updated and added to my articles about phone setup:
Termux and git hugo rsync I’ve also purchased a few peripherals to try to make up for the sad state of modern phone features. I got a case, a usb-c u-bend, a headphone jack usb-c splitter, and a small bluetooth keyboard.
So far I have only tested the keyboard, which failed spectacularly. Whenever it times out to save battery, it fails to reconnect and has to be setup from scratch.

First I’ve got my complete setup to clone the git repo written here (just updated!). apt install hugo in termux cd to the hugo folder run with drafts locally with hugo server -D --noBuildLock Go to http://localhost:1313 to review kill with ctrl+c when done Do a final build with hugo --noBuildLock Then push with rsync as detailed in another of my old writeups I’ve had to add the –noBuildLock flag to the hugo commands because of an issue with build lock on Android.

Haibane Renmei is an anime I return to again and again. There’s an idea introduced in the first few episodes that resonates with me far outside the bounds of the show: The main characters are restricted to only own items that are used.
I never finished the show. So I never learned why this limitation is placed on the Haibane. The more important thing for me is that this limitation sounds like an interesting guideline for myself.

Destiny 2 I’ve been playing catch up on the season content and a lot of Crucible (the PVP mode).
Having never really recovered from the sleep schedule destruction of daylight savings time, I elected to take some vacation at the end of the week. I devoted that time solely to two pursuits: waking up on time and going to sleep on time. As a result my brain was fuzzy and I accomplished basically nothing else. Instead I played Destiny 2. I logged about 44 hours in the game in the last week and a half as a result.

Daylight savings time has absolutely destroyed me this week. I did nearly nothing I planned on and zombied my way through. I’ve heard similar things from those around me. Instead of pushing through, next time I should just step back and focus on resetting. I have slips in sleep schedule pretty often and that always works best. It’s just hard to remember to do the right thing when I’m already sleep deprived.

Over a year ago, my Polaroid 600 Business Edition started draining the batteries of film continuously, causing me to waste a lot of money on unused shots. I set it aside, planning to buy a replacement camera.
Since then, I’ve shopped around for a new camera, 600 or otherwise, but haven’t been able to settle on anything. The Polaroid 600 cameras on ebay are all either untested or expensive. Modern digital cameras are only in the high end due to phones.

3D Scanning As I write this, my second 3D print of a scanned object is printing off. By the time I post this a full single-topic article will be up describing my experience. I started working with this device over a year ago. Why did it take me so long to get back to this? I’ve put more detail in the article, but it really comes down to procrastination. Getting this done has been hanging over my head, in part because the scanner is a loaner.

A while back my girlfriend’s step-dad leant me 3D Systems’ Sense 2 scanner. I similarly got access to an old MonoPrice MP Select Mini 3D Printer from a friend who had upgraded quite a while ago. So I theoretically have both ends of the 3D replication pipeline now. Unfortunately, just like with the MP Mini, there are some limitations. And, while the MP Mini has (or at least had) a thriving community to support it with guides, tutorials, hacks, and mods, the Sense 2 does not seem to have the same support.

I worked hard on this! It has been in draft form for more than 2 years -_- I’m glad I finally sat down and cleaned up my thoughts on this topic this week.
Airsonic Possibly the last time I will write about Airsonic for a while, not because of any issues, but because of how well it is going.

I believe there are 3 things you need to know to interact with any system optimally:
How it was intended to work. How people think it works. How it actually works. Knowing how the system was intended to work can help in finding the optimal way to interact with it. If you work with a system with the designer’s intentions in mind, you can take a path that is compatible with their future plans, and even their oversights.

Airsonic + beets My airsonic + beets journey continues. It turns out there’s no really good way to merge singletons into an album in beets aside from re-importing (references here and here). So the tracks I imported with the -s flag have been an enormous pain the ass. In addition I somehow did something, I don’t know what, that wiped all the track data for the Umurangi Generation and Umurangi Generation Macro soundtracks.

So far airsonic works great… for the music which happens to be in a /artist/album/track folder structure and is properly tagged. So the most common solutions for getting your music organized this way are MusicBrainz Picard and beets. Picard is a non-starter for me because my music is on a headless server with only web interfaces and shell connections exposed.

Within corporations there are attempts at innovation that move processes within the plane below. The hope is that every change will increase speed to market without affecting risk. However, in reality, for a process of adequate maturity, almost all changes will move along the line pictured below.
Typically a negative symptom of this is a loop of process changes that repeats infinitely and goes something like this:
Firm is at point A - medium risk and medium speed to market Firm finds a reason to consider this speed to market to be too slow (perhaps smaller more risk tolerant competitors are observed) Firm moves to point B via an “innovative new process”.

Farsighted The first of the two books, Farsighted - How We Make the Decisions That Matter the Most, was a very entertaining read. It’s the kind of self help book that contains only a few small action items.

I’m adding ringtones via Termux because you can script the process! Instructions assume a ~ (Termux home) start point.
Download the file from wherever you’re keeping it. You can use curl or some other such thing. There are some Creative Commons files you can get off YouTube with youtube-dl (although YouTube frowns on downloading their videos at all).
youtube-dl --extract-audio --audio-format mp3 <link to YT video> You then need to move this to the Ringtones folder (or Notifications or Alarms depending on your usecase).

It’s important to note that the professor here is not a character that the reader is intended to sympathize with. So this quote does not necessarily reflect the opinions of Ellis.
I haven’t written anything here in quite a while. Work got crazy and my house projects got intense. I guess I haven’t yet figured out how to make blogging a core part of my routine.
Since I last wrote a lot has happened! I attended Colossalcon, which was great! My panel proposal for Matsuricon got accepted. So I need to start preparing that…

I have well over 100 open tabs on my phone right now. I think I use my phone’s browser as an extension of my working memory. So I’m always afraid to close anything that’s open if I still have active thoughts on the subject. Luckily Chrome automatically archives tabs that have been inactive for a while so my phone can still function in this state.
What follows are a few of the tabs I have open.

I’m writing this entirely from my Android phone! I spent quite a few hours trying to figure out how to get a clone of my git repository on here and hit a lot of dead ends. I tried multiple sets of instructions for AIDE and mGit with no success. Finally I found the Termux app which actually supports everything I need! For some reason Termux was not coming up in any of my searches for git clients on Android.

First, for the video itself, the style and visual choices are excellent. Patrik Wallner has created something really special here. The minimal narratives that are mixed in add a layer of depth that give the video a punch not normally seen in these kinds of pieces. We get to see the skaters waking up, setting up tricks. There’s an extra focus on framing and shots of background are interspersed in a way that reminds me of something from Kyoto Animation.

I have a lot of bookmarks. Like a lot. With the exception of the ones in my toolbar I never ever look at them after I save them. I always intend to. Everytime I make a bookmark, I figure I will get back to it at some point in the future. It’s usually something I don’t have time for right at that moment or something I enjoyed so much that I want to be able to find it again.

We’re all finding that the war for our attention is difficult to deal with. This is a key piece to the modern realization of the cyberpunk dystopias promised to us. I’m constantly fighting and losing against the advertisements and feeds and algorithms. Even the things I like are run in such a way that they are as addicitive as possible. They have to be in order to compete with everything else.

I started setting up Hugo to run my site. Hopefully this will decrease the friction for blogging and I’ll start writing more, but I make no promises.
So far Hugo seems to be a pretty straight forward site generator. After developing Adobe Experience Manager customizations professionally for 5 years this feels nice and simple. When I was picking between the various blogging platforms I had a number of criteria:
Minimal Set Up Full Control Over Design and Markup Minimal Cost (this quickly led me to static site generators) Markdown support Full Control over site structure I also looked at IndieWeb support.

I feel bad for not having done it before. I guess I just expected it to be more involved. I’ve been trying to bite the bullet and actually complete things on my TODO list lately.

I decided a few weeks ago that it is time to remove Google Analytics from my site. I initially included it so that I could mess around with the service because I occasionally use it for work. Since then I haven’t used it at all and I realized that this is just one more source feeding the Google ad machine.
No one visits my site now. They have no reason to, but I do want to start creating more content here.

It’s almost, but not quite, a perfect loop! I wanted this to be a quick one and isolating TT-392’s animation was more time than it was worth.
I really enjoyed this show!

From August of 2013 to February of 2016 I did all of my blogging type activities on my Tumblr. Hopefully at some point I will move the more important bits over to this blog to save them from the inevitable loss of tumblr in the future. It looks like there are current instructions for doing so on Tumblr’s Zendesk.
Most of what I did during that period was drawing. I tried to draw an image a day and then schedule them for posting later when I had a decent set built up.

In 2010 I was heavily embedded in the Columbus 2D fighting game scene (think Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat). Many of these games offer an option to randomly select a character, but Marvel Vs Capcom 2 does not. Character selection for the game is actually quite complex as well. For a short time there was an online util that you could use to get a team. It was very simple and at some point it dropped off the internet.

I ran KoLumbus 5 in 2009 with much help from the previous organizers and a couple of my closest clan mates. Well over a hundred people attended over 3 days. You can still see a thread were we planned the event on the game’s forum.

Much of college is a blur. I was incredibly depressed at the time and I think I’ve bottled up those memories as tightly as possible. However when I Googled myself I found this old game I helped out on called Armadillo Asphalt Apocalypse. I still occasionally talk with one of the other guys who put much of the work into the game. I do now vaguely remember messing around with it, but I can’t for the life of me remember how heavy my contribution ended up being.

I’m thinking of maybe slowly filling in holes here in my blag’s chronology with links and archived content from between 1987 and now. I might never get to all of it, but I want to get some of the more interesting items in.
