Week Notes

The world is impressively messy right now. I must admit that I’ve mostly turned inward. My focus over the last few months has been on a project that I don’t really want to talk about until I have something to show. Hopefully the first small piece will be ready to present soon.

I’ve enjoyed over a year of taking the bus to work now. The difference between busing and driving is incredible. I’m getting exercise from the walk to and from the bus stop. I’m getting back time by using the ride itself for writing and relaxing. I know a lot of people can’t make it work, but, if you have the option, I highly recommend it!

Games

I’ve narrowed my gaming scope down to Sega Genesis (+CD and 32X), PS2, Dreamcast, indie PC, and a few mainstream PC games my friends play, with that order of priority.

There are so many fun Genesis homebrew titles releasing all the time, and a massive back catalog that I’ve never touched. I’m going to be busy for the rest of my life!

Right now I’m playing through this impressive Cave Story port. And before that my best friend and I played through Doom 32X Resurrection co-op which was a blast. It’s so much better than the original release!

I’m most looking forward to the release of Chords.

I worry that this refocusing on these 3 consoles is pure nostalgia, but most of the games I’m playing are completely new to me. I’m making a conscious decision to step away from most of the modern gaming landscape because most of what I see I don’t like.

Reading

Late to the party I read The Three-Body Problem and it honestly made me scared for the future. The anti-intellectualism in particular felt familiar. I didn’t really like the book though. I don’t expect that I will read the rest of the series.

I also finally caught up on the physical releases of Ascendance of a Bookwork. I binged Part 5 Volumes 5 through 8 in less than a week. The Diamond bankruptcy had temporarily cut off my normal supply for these but I grabbed the missing volumes from The Book Loft instead.

Since I last wrote I’ve also read ~3 Warhammer 40k books, all from my library’s digital collection. The best of these was the first volume of the Ahriman series. I’m reading Horus Rising now, but it doesn’t have me fully engaged.

Sports

Hally and I caught most of the Houston win in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four. That was easily the best game of basketball I’ve ever watched. Prior to this year I haven’t really been interested in basketball, but the NBA’s full game highlight series on YouTube has really increased my interest.

As usual I’ve been watching the Crew, and, while their record isn’t horrible, they definitely feel a little off. I think that’s been happening since the playoffs last year. I don’t blame the team leadership for trading Cucho and Ramirez, but it’s definitely harder for them to get goals than it used to be.

The Journey Continues

I’ve had multiple aborted attempts to post here weekly. Each period that I’ve been successful it has felt so satisfying. I think the thing that always trips me up is that writing takes a significant amount of time. I have an enormous amount of interests and so my time is always extremely scarce, but my phone and YouTube take up more time than any other thing that isn’t work or sleep.
