Side Quests - Week Notes
This week I gave a tiny peek behind the curtain on what I’ve been working on with a technical blog post about Sega Genesis development. I don’t think I will have anything else to share in that space anytime soon, if ever, but I would love to prove myself wrong.
Writing that post was part of a new plan I have to hopefully create smaller side quest releases as I work. That way if I never finish a big project, at least I’ll have smaller things out in the world.
I have a lot of hobbies. A lot of hobbies means a lot of projects. A lot of unfinished projects. That’s great because it means I’ll never run out of stuff to do, but it’s bad because it means I’m stretched pretty thin. I almost never complete things before the window of enthusiasm to do so fades.
This new side quest idea comes after other successes in dealing with the same problem - I’m focusing on an MVP-first approach. I didn’t instantly start painting an entire Warhammer army. I painted one mini. I’m no longer playing games like a completionist. I’m sticking to the main quests.
I’m also keeping that short attention span in mind when I pick up new things. I check games for playtime before buying, and I’m playing a lot more demos. I’m not buying box sets as much anymore. I’m using the library again.
Games
This week I gave some demos a try!
First up, Caravan SandWitch, which looks like a great exploration game from the short demo. I’ve had my eye on this since it was announced. It reminds me a little bit of Sable, which I absolutely loved. Hopefully I’ll be able to get to the full game one day soon.
I also gave Tiny Bookshop’s demo a go. I hadn’t watched any footage before playing, just a short teaser. I was surprised to find a fairly in-depth store management sim tricked out with lost of goals and stuff. I think this is making it into my short list as well.
Reading
I finished up Relic. My loan for Horus Rising expired so I had to return it to the library before I could finish it. So I guess I’ll come back to that one later.
Movies
We saw the Minecraft movie and it was excellent, especially with a laughing clapping and cheering cloud!
I wasn’t super familiar with everything they referenced since I almost exclusively play heavily modded Minecraft, but that didn’t matter. The core concepts were there and somehow didn’t feel like a ‘member berry fest to me. It more felt like “you all already know this, so I won’t bother explaining it.”
Little mini subplots had payoff. The actors played the most ridiculous parts perfectly straight. It had a particular brand of comedy and camp, which might not be for everyone but it was for me.
I do worry what a sequel might do to that feeling when they inevitably make one. But, for now, I suspect I will be buying the bluray.
The Journey Continues
Three posts in two weeks! A rarity for me. As always I make no promises about future posts. That way lies disappointment.
Get out there and complete something. You’ll appreciate it! Until next time, stay chill and enjoy
