Marriage!

I’m married now! We had a wonderful ceremony and reception. My wife worked so hard on everything to make it absolutely amazing! I put in a lot of work as well of course, but she really owned the event. The planning and lead up activities pretty much consumed our entire existence this year. Now I’m trying to remember how to relax.

Miniatures

With the wedding prep going on, I haven’t done much hobby stuff at all, but I did manage to play a couple of rounds of Space Station Zero. It turns out I missed a key paragraph about terrain so I’ve been basically playing on an open board this whole time! From now on my games should be a lot more interesting with cover and verticality.

As part of my bachelor’s party we went to Warp Gate and everyone painted a space marine. I made mine purple with silver accents to make him stand out from the other Ultramarines and Dark Angels I have. Everyone was creative and we all had a great time!

The rest of my bachelor’s party was equally excellent: batting cages, Hounddogs Pizza, and Old North Arcade. My best man really did an excellent job!

Sports

I really enjoyed the batting cages! It was only my 3rd time ever hitting baseballs (possibly 4th if you count the 1 day I showed up to t-ball practice). I plan to get my own bat and go back again whenever I can!

This season has been tough for the Blue Jays. It has been hard to watch Vladimir Guerrero Jr. struggle. I hope he finds his swing again soon. There’s still a chance that they’ll make the wildcard, but the window is closing. Even so, I’ve watched pretty much every game’s highlights video on YouTube, which is my best access to baseball right now.

My wife and I also followed the Tour de France again this year in the same way. NBC Sport’s extended highlights for cycling have been great for the last several years. This year had some great moments, but Vingegaard’s crash was pretty tough. And now Pogacar has crashed out of the Vuelta with a season ending injury as well. A tough year for the top contenders.

Video Games

With my miniatures hyperfixation driving strong, I’ve had very little time or attention for video games. But that doesn’t mean I’ve played nothing at all.

I started a playthrough of the Toyota Yaris game for Xbox 360. It is quite difficult, but I have been able to beat the first boss! I can’t remember if I’ve ever done that before. I don’t know what attracts me to this game, but every once in a while I feel the urge to return to it. What a strange artifact.

We played a lot of Mortal Kombat II at the arcade during my bachelor’s party. I still know what I’m doing more or less. We also played some Smash Bros, both on N64 and Gamecube. I have completely forgotten how to play those lol

I’m slowly becoming more attached to the idea that I’m limiting myself to a subset of the consoles I own, with no plans to expand further. I spoke about this before in earlier Week Notes. My key consoles are the Sega Genesis, PS2, and Dreamcast, plus PC for newer and indie stuff. That being said, I think I’m going to be sprinkling in more Xbox and Xbox 360 stuff. Maybe some PS3? Probably some handhelds. I still want to focus on the original list though.

I guess the main thing is that I want to stay away from PS5 or newer consoles, and Nintendo home consoles. I need to find a way to narrow down my collection, but every time I think of getting rid of my NES, SNES, N64 or Wii I come up with some reason to hold onto them.

The Journey Continues

Matsuricon is up next! My wife and I are excited to be at a con again! It has been a whole year I think since our last one because Sekaicon moved to October.

Tom Sachs has a list of rules to live by and one of them is “Output before you input”. So this morning I did a little work on assembling my Eldar Guardians, and then I went upstairs and wrote this. You can do it too! It really is a game changer.
